The VISUAL ARTS program offers magnet students an opportunity to receive from four to five weekly hours of highly specialized instruction in drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, sculpting, textiles, photography, aesthetics and art history.
Throughout the year, field trips, events, and visiting artists give students valuable exposure to the natural environment and the local art community.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS & PROCEDURES

Students applying for admission to the Visual Arts Talent  Program should prepare portfolio consisting of at least five of their  best examples of their artwork, representing as many different media as  possible. The screening/audition process includes an observation, imagination, and a visual memory test. Previous formal instruction in art is not required.

How to Apply

HOW TO APPLY TO SOUTH MIAMI K-8 CENTER EXPRESSIVE ARTS CENTER

Step 1. Magnet Application

THE MAGNET APPLICATION IS OPEN FROM OCTOBER 1 THROUGH JANUARY 15

 Step 2. Eligibility Requirements

Please make sure your child meets eligibility requirements before you apply. Students that do not meet magnet criteria will be declared ineligible.

 Step 3. Tour the Program

A Magnet tour is scheduled for every other Wednesday each month from October - January. 

TOUR DATES

  • Held every other Wednesday during the Magnet Application Period, October 1, 2024-January 15, 2025.
    • October: 2, 16, 30
    • November: 6, 20
    • December: 4, 18
  • Parents are to arrive at the school at 8:50am. Tours will begin promptly promptly at 9:00am and last about one hour.
  • You must present a government issued I.D. to security at the front gate for school access. Only those meeting this requirement will be allowed to participate in the tour.

 Step 5. Magnet Open House

Magnet Open House for Prospective students and parents (Magnet Night): November 6,2024 at 6:00PM.

In-School Magnet Assembly for current SMK8 students & parents interested in magnet  Pre-K -2nd: December 18, 2024 during school hours.

 Step 6.  Audition

Students entering 3rd, 4th & 5th grade must schedule their audition. 

The date is selected and scheduled by parents at the time the online magnet application is submitted.

Arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled audition time, ready for your audition. The audition will not be interrupted once it has begun.

Visual Art Magnet Audition Dates

  • 4th & 5th Grade: Tuesday, February 4, 2025 @ 3:30pm
  • 3rd Grade: Wednesday, February 5, 2025 @ 2:30pm.
  • MAKE-UP AUDITIONS: February 26, 2025 at 2:30PM.

Audition Requirements for Visual Art

  • Bring your portfolio, consisting of 5 to 10 examples of self-created artwork.
  • Arrive to your audition, ready to draw. (No materials are needed
  • Students will be asked to create a drawing by observation, one of their imagination and one from visual memory. The audition last approximately 2 hours.
  • Students will be interviewed and asked a variety of questions to ascertain their interest level and about their portfolio work.

Art Magnet Materials

Class sets of art materials purchased with the parent booster donations will be available for student use in the art room. Students do not need to purchase any other art materials for class. 

 
The suggested materials for home use include: 
  • soft and hard pencils (HB-6B) 
  • eraser
  • blending sticks
  • color pencils
  • watercolors
  • markers (both thick and thin) 
  • brushes (varied sizes for acrylics and watercolors) 
  • Michron pen/s or sharpie pen 
  • magazines - old or new (for collage) 
  • glue
  • a set of acrylic paint - I recommend Marie’s acrylic colour paint set (18 colours, 12 ml) sold for $7.55 at Jerry's Artorama
 

I highly recommend Jerry’s Artarama on 6448 B South Dixie Hwy. 
These materials stay home and are for student’s personal use with homework assignments.

Art Magnet Shirt & Canvas Bag

Shirts can be worn on Thursdays and must be worn on field trips. Parents may opt to buy one for themselves to wear if chaperoning on field trips or if assisting with fundraising and art magnet events.
Canvas Bags can be used to facilitate the transportation of their sketchbooks and any personal items to and from the art magnet classroom. These items are ordered through Ms. Caloor via a form provided to students at the start of the school year in their "Welcome Packet".

Homework

Weekly Sketchbook Homework Assignments

 
Students: Please carefully observe the object, person, plant, animal, or insect. Spend time recording as many details as possible. Look for texture, value, and pattern. Draw from life or an image from a magazine or the internet.
 
Parents: In the first page under the homework tab of their sketchbook there will be a simplified list/table of all of these assignments along with an area in which to sign verifying that you supervised your child completing their homework assignment for that week and that they dedicated at least 30 minutes to their sketch. 
 
Homework is due every Friday for a grade. One theme per page. Fill up each page, go off of the page, remember the rule of thirds, and composition. Late homework will result in a lower letter grade.

Week 2: Draw a Self-Portrait. Look closely and carefully at yourself in a mirror. Draw a portrait of yourself from the waist up. Include an expression.
 
Week 3: Portrait of mother or special woman in your life. Include hands and expression. Add the texture of her hair, the patterns and details in her clothing. Include the background and make sure to overlap.
 
Week 4: Portrait of father or special man in your life. Include hands and expression. Add the texture of his hair, the patterns and details in his clothing. Include the background and make sure to overlap.
