Welcome to the new South Miami K-8 Center website. We are a magnet school for the arts providing art, music, dance and drama instruction for eligible students in grades three through eight. Our total school population includes children from Pre-kindergarten through grade eight. Academic excellence is our number one goal. We live by our motto: "Raise Your Spirits and Soar Like Eagles!" Educational excellence enables our students to lead an intelligent life. Mastery of reading, writing, and mathematics is essential to this goal. Reading, writing, and math open the door to understand and achieve in history, sociology, science, economics, and the performing and visual arts. Attendance Policy
The School Board of Miami-Dade County Bylaws & Policies
5200-ATTENDANCE
Parents and students are responsible for attendance which shall be required of all students during the days and hours that the school is in session.
Students are counted in attendance only if they are present for at least two (2) hours of the school day.
Absences shall be reported to the school attendance office by the parent or adult student. It is required that the parent provide a statement of the cause for such absence or required documentation within (3) school days upon the return to school of the student or the absence will result in an unexcused absence.
REASONABLE EXCUSES FOR TIME MISSED AT SCHOOL:
Only absences listed below will be marked as excused once documentation is received:
- Personal illness of the student. Medical evidence must be provided when exceeding 5 consecutive days.
- Court appearance of the student.
- Absence due to a medical appointment requires a written statement from a health care provider.
- Observance of a religious holiday when it is mandated for all members of a faith.
- Death in the immediate family.
UNEXCUSED ABSENCES
- Vacations, personal services, local non-school event, program or sporting activity.
- Older students providing day care services for siblings.
- Illness of others.
- Non-compliance with immunization requirements.
TARDINESS
A student is considered tardy if they are not present in class when the school late bell rings.
EARLY SIGN OUTS
No student shall be released within the final thirty (30) minutes of the school day. Please schedule doctor’s appointment after school hours and/or pick up students with sufficient time so that it does not interfere with the 30-minute rule.
PK-thru 1st Grade: Parent must arrive to the main office not later than 1:15pm for early sign out.
2nd -8th Grade: Parent must arrive to the main office not later than 2:30pm for early student sign out.

ARRIVAL ALL GRADES:
The arrival of students to the school by car and bus is “drive thru” style, in front of the school going eastbound on 60th street. For safety reasons, this is the only approved area to drop off students. School gates open at 7:30am. For safety reasons, Parents are not to drop off students before 7:30am.
PLEASE NOTE: Posted signs of NO STOPPING OR STANDING between 7:30-8:30am & 1:30-3:30pm.
Adhere to posted signs to avoid traffic citations.
DISMISSAL:
Dismissal for PK-1 is in front of the school going eastbound on 60th Street. Parents/Guardians may park in front of the school, any weekday, but Wednesday. Be familiar with the posted traffic signs in front of the school.
Dismissal for grades 2-5 is “drive thru” style by entering through the west gate of the parking lot on 60th street and driving to the back of the school parking lot and exiting through the same entrance gate.
Dismissal for grades 6-8 is “drive-thru” style in front of the school eastbound on 60th street.
PLEASE NOTE: Posted signs of No Stopping or Standing between 7:30-8:30am & 1:30-3:30pm. Adhere to posted signs to avoid traffic citations.
Any person visiting the school for official business may park in the front of the school on 60th street between the hours of 8:45 am and 1:30pm. There are posted signs of NO stopping or Standing between 7:30-8:30am & 1:30-3:30pm. Adhere to posted signs to avoid traffic citations.

GUIA DE DEJADA Y RECOGIDA DE ESTUDIANTES

LLEGADA
El punto de llegada y dejada de todos los estudiantes que llegan en carro o autobús es en frente de la escuela en la 60 calle en dirección este. Por razones de seguridad, este es el único punto aprobado para dejar a los estudiantes. El portón de entrada de la escuela se abre a las 7:30am. Por favor no dejar a los estudiantes antes de esta hora sin supervisión.
NOTA: Carteles de tráfico en enfrente de la escuela indica que no se debe detener o estacionar en frente de la escuela entre las horas de 7:30-8:30am y 1:30-3:30pm.
RECOGIDA
La recogida de estudiantes de PK-1 grado es en frente de la escuela en la calle 60 en dirección este. Se puede estacionar enfrente de la escuela excepto el miércoles. Poner atención a los horarios de los carteles de tráfico enfrente de la escuela.
La recogida de estudiantes de 2-5 grado es por carro a través del portón de entrada oeste en la 60 calle hacia el parqueo de atrás de la escuela y luego utilizando el mismo portón de entrada para salir.
La recogida de estudiantes de 6-8 grado es en frente de la escuela en la calle 60 en dirección este.
NOTA: Carteles de tráfico en frente de la escuela indica que no se debe detener o estacionar en frente de la escuela entre las horas de 7:30-8:30am y 1:30-3:30pm.
Cualquier persona que visite la escuela puede estacionar en frente de la escuela entre las horas de 8:45am y 1:30pm. Respete los carteles de tráfico para evitar multas.
